Silver Sunday – the National Day for Older People

Submitted by Fenn Reynolds on

Silver Sunday is a day dedicated to older people. Initially it was started as a response to social isolation and loneliness among our older population. It is now a national day where everyone can come together by hosting fun and free events for older people around the country: a day where older people can meet new people, visit new places, try new activities and connect with their local communities and generations around them.

Simply put, it is a day for older people to enjoy themselves and given the past two years, the Silver Sunday organisation believe this is now more important than ever.

More than 50 organisations in the City of Westminster took part last year including Paddington Recreation Ground, Age UK Westminster, Metro Bank, the London Chinese Community Centre and the Royal Albert Hall.

It takes place annually on the first Sunday in October, which this year will be on Sunday 2 October. Events are also welcomed before and after Silver Sunday itself.

How can we take part?

This year they are again encouraging local businesses, community groups and organisations to put on free/low-cost activities which welcome older people. If you are already planning something similar in October, or run regular activities for older people, you can highlight those too.

For ideas, inspiration and more details on how to get involved, please see the Info Pack and other useful Resources.

This year is also the 10th anniversary of Silver Sunday which started in Westminster, so they really hope you can join us in this very special year.
