Binaries and Beyond: How to Study the Sexual Past?

Submitted by Fenn Reynolds on

Come and join Dr Isabell Dahms at North Kensington Library for an exciting talk this Pride month.

This talk explores the instability of ideas of sexuality and gender in the past and present. It asks how binaries, such as those of male/female, homo/heterosexual, public/private, biology/culture, shape our understanding of the past. We will explore some aspects of the emergence of Western European gender and sexual binaries, looking for example at medical and colonial discourses, and discuss changing interpretations of London’s queer history.
