Workshop Invitation: Shaping the North Kensington Social Justice Archive with the Voluntary Sector

KCSC recently took part in a discussion at North Kensington Library where a fantastic, if somewhat daunting, prospect of a North Kensington archive was debated.

As the lead for this project Dr Pablo Sendra, of The Bartlett School of Planning - part of UCL, met Joe Batty for a further discussion on how the Voluntary Sector (integral to much that is good in North Kensington) might be involved. Below is a brief call to action and participation:

The North Kensington Social Justice Archive is an exciting new initiative dedicated to documenting 150 years of social justice movements in North Kensington. Supported by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC) Libraries and Archives Service, this community-driven project aims to preserve the rich history of struggle and community action that have shaped the area.

As part of the Discovery Phase, the project team is organizing a series of engagement events to collaborate with local people in shaping the archive. These events are designed to ensure that the archive reflects the diverse voices and experiences of the North Kensington community.

One of these events is a workshop specifically for the Voluntary Sector in North Kensington. This 2-hour workshop will focus on discussing the structure, content, and governance of the archive. Participants will have the opportunity to contribute ideas on which stories, histories, events, and places should be included in the archive, as well as explore potential locations for its establishment.

Workshop Details:
•    Duration: 2 hours
•    Date: To be scheduled between 16 September and 4 October 2024
•    Location: A venue convenient and familiar to the Voluntary Sector in North Kensington

The insights and perspectives of local voluntary organizations are essential to ensuring that the archive accurately represents the community's history and values. This workshop will be a collaborative space where participants can help shape a resource that will serve as a lasting testament to North Kensington's legacy of social justice.

Voluntary organizations interested in participating in the workshop are encouraged to get in touch to confirm their availability. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a project that will preserve the vibrant history of North Kensington for future generations.

As lead for Community Development at KCSC, Joe notes that he admires the scope and sheer size of this undertaking, and urges partners to get behind it. The initiative has already gained great traction with community activists, and the idea of co-creating such a space is a fabulous way to celebrate our shared history.
