Community Resilience
Traditional models of resiliency mostly focus on disaster-preparedness activities. Whilst disaster preparedness is important for the VCS, community resilience is also about the building blocks that that are needed across the social and economic spectrum to enable communities to thrive.
Community resilience is about promoting the many systems that contribute to a community’s overall health, these include social connectedness and everyday health and community systems.
Core elements identified for community resilience were:
- local knowledge
- community networks and relationships
- communication
- health
- governance and leadership
- resources
- economic investment
- preparedness
- and mental outlook
So how does our local voluntary and community organisations and social activists support the building of Community Resilience? Social connectedness, the sense of community and belonging as well as supporting mental resilience is important aspects of what we do. Our AGM will hear from such organisations including:
Nucleus Legal Advice
Celebrating 50 years in existence, Nucleus’ mission is to help provide access to justice disadvantaged members of the community through the provision of information, advice, assistance, representation and education in social welfare law. Come and here how the work of Nucleus helps build resilience for local residents dealing with day to day issues that impact their lives.
Kamitan Arts
Kamitan Arts is a locally born organisation that focuses on working with and promoting the talents of local people in creative arts through spoken word and the performing arts. The work of Kamitan Arts is aimed at addressing issues that impact the daily lives of communities and the activities of Kamitan Arts is a force for good towards healing and wellness and building resilience.
Fit For Life Youth
Fit for Life understand the persistent issues that continue to plague young people in the community. Challenges such as living with the traumas of the Grenfell, inadequate physical and mental health support, serious youth violence, drug use and appropriate employment and skills development. As a grassroots organisation, it is their purpose to exert every effort to mitigate these challenges and their detrimental impacts on the youth in the community through physical and mental health fitness and training.
