Celebrating 50 Years

Many voluntary and community organisations in Kensington and Chelsea can trace their roots back to the 60s, 70s and 80s. As part of our celebration of the history of the sector a number of organisations contributed the photographs and images below displaying their work in support of local communities.

If you have any images you are able to share we would gladly add them to our presentation.

More about this page ...

The Social Council was set up in 1960 as a unifying campaigning body for local grassroots groups that had sprung up in response to the race riots in Ladbroke Grove in 1958. Named the Notting Hill Social Council, the organisation later merged with its younger sister organisation, the Chelsea Social Council and now forms the current umbrella organisation for community and voluntary organisations across the whole borough.

Throughout its history the Social Council has supported local activism and voluntary services. It has played a leading role in siginificant local campaigns like the opposition to the new Westway flyover in the late 60s and 70s.

In 2010 we aim to celebrate this rich heritage and continue our work through a series of special events to mark the occaision.

These web pages are intended as part of that celebration.
