KCSC Seminars

These seminars provide the opportunity for the local voluntary and community sector to debate on national policy issues which affect the sector locally. We discuss current issues which require local views and local solutions.

We encourage attendance from a wide range of diverse organisations to enable a full debate on issues which impact on all members of the sector.

The seminars will provide you with an opportunity to:

  • Discuss how policy issues affect members of your community
  • Hear what's happening at the national and local level
  • Look at local solutions

What Is Big Society?

Monday, 5 July  12.30pm - 2.30pm

The term 'Big Society' was used a lot in the run up to the election and forms a centrepiece of the new government's plans. This seminar examined what this term actually means and what its effect on the local sector is likely to be. Participants discussed how we could help shape it.

KCSC Annual Lecture on Inequality and Poverty

This event on 2 June 2010 was addressed by Professor John Hills from the National Equality Panel speaking on the recommendations of his recent publication ‘An Anatomy of Economic Inequality in the UK’.

Michelle Kennedy, Child Poverty Sector Specialist; C4EO also gave an overview of some of the government's work to combat child poverty, highlighting its wider impact.

Maeve McGoldrick introduced the work on the Working Age Poverty project which Community Links have teamed up with Church Action on Poverty to deliver. The project aims to uncover the views of people of working age on poverty, work and unemployment

Voluntary and Community Sector Election Hustings

Wednesday, April 21 2010, 10.30am - 12.30pm

This event allowed voluntary and community sector workers, volunteers and trustees put their questions to parliamentary election candidates. Participants were:

  • Eddie Adams - Alliance for Green Socialism
  • Sam Edwards - Labour Party
  • Robin Meltzer - Liberal Democrat
  • Sir Malcolm Rifkind - Conservative Party
  • Julia Stephenson - Green Party.

The event was attended by over 85 people and was chaired by Samia Ahmed, Journalist, Channel 4 News.


Unlocking Social Enterprise Potential in Kensington and Chelsea

Wednesday 27 January 2010, 5.00pm – 7.00pm 

This event looked examined the social enterprise model and asked if it suitable for all organisations. Support from Social enterprise London and RBKC's Business Initiatives Officer was also offered.

Ruth Lesirge - Visiting Fellow and Head of Governance Practice; Centre for Charity Effectiveness; Cass Business School.

This seminar examined some of the many questions that organisations need to think about in regard to succession planning. It also looked at the practical issues of supporting and developing staff through the merger of 2 separate organisations and learnt more about the role of the chief executive in succession planning and the experience of staff members.

Generating Income

This seminar looked at ways organisations could diversify their income against a background of declining grants and pressure to deliver services. Different forms of the social enterprise model were examined with organisations who have successfully used it sharing their experiences.

Participants were encouraged to think about how they could build on their own services and current capacity to generate new revenue streams.

Commissioning public sector services is fast becoming the mainstay of voluntary sector funding, but what impact has commissioning had on the sector to date?

This seminar looked at how the sector is coping with the changes and whether delivering public sector contracts is of benefit to those delivering services.  It also looked at ways in which the sector could continue to prepare itself for competitive tendering.

Working in Partnership

Working in partnership is fast becoming a solution for voluntary and community organisations that are wondering how they will continue to deliver services in the  future. 

This seminar heard from speakers who gave an overview of the policy developments dictating the drive towards partnership working and learnt the lessons from successful partnerships as well as  some of the possible pitfalls. Attendees were able to consider what there orgaisations could offer to potential partners and think about what their needs would be.

The Implications of Personalisation for the Voluntary and Community Sector

Wednesday 17 December 2008, 4.30pm - 6.30pm 

Speaker: Paul Rackham, Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea
                 Jamie Renton, ADKC
                 Jas Johal, ADKC
                 Mick Jones, Vitalise

This seminar looked at what the personalisation agenda meant for the local voluntary and community sector delivering adult social care. It addressed the challenges facing the sector in understanding its role within the agenda and discussed whether organisations are ready for the changes ahead. 

It heard from local authority officers about the ways in which personalisation is being introduced into the borough and drew upon the lessons learnt from the pilot study. The experience of independent budget users was used to look at solutions for organisations that are unsure of what the implications will be and cover ways in which they can benefit.
