WinterFest 2009
Kings Road Shoppers Celebrate the Work of Local Charities and Sign Up to Volunteer
Sunday 6th December 2009, Chelsea Old Town Hall, Kings Road, SW3 5EE
Visitors to Kings Road interrupted their Christmas shopping on Sunday 6th December to pop in to WinterFest 2009 at Chelsea Old Town Hall and celebrate the work of Charities in Kensington and Chelsea.
Over 300 people browsed themed stalls and exhibitions whilst being entertained by music including festive tunes from the Ebony Steel Band, film of local communities and a new play ‘Reflections’ performed by school children from the Theatre of Possibility.
Over 60 groups were involved in the event, the first of it’s kind, which was staged to give local people an insight in to the work of local charitable organisations, to see how groups work and support local communities.
A 3m high art installation resembling Christmas tree formed the centrepiece of the main exhibition which was opened by Kensington and Chelsea Mayor Timothy Coleridge. Guests and visitors joined the festive mood by hanging decorations inscribed with wishes for the new year before the Mayor mounted a ladder to top the tree with a festive star.
Whilst browsing the displays and enjoying the free mince pies and mulled wine served by volunteers from SMART (St Mary Abbots Rehabilitation and Training) many visitors, impressed by the dedication they witnessed were inspired to register their interest in volunteering. They lucky ones also got to take away prizes donated by local businesses. The money raised through the raffle will go to one of the unfunded groups that participated on the day.
